During winter if you live where the nights get long, you could be suffering with Seasonal Affective Disorder, (related to CRD).  Why do we generally feel more alert in the summer than winters? This is due to how much sunlight we receive through our eye receptors which affect the production of serotonin and melatonin, (see index bar for further information), and inturn affects our moods, and sleep patterns.

Serotonin is responsible for general 'happy and normal well-being', melatonin is responsible for triggering sleep.  Its been scientifically proven, (see index bars for further information), that sunlight increases Serotonin, and keeps your body clock, (Circadian Rhythm) in natural sync with night and day.  Serotonin has been scientifically identified as playing a major part in depressive and anxiety disorders if a person is lacking in serotonin.  Many of the anti depression medications are geared to increase uptake of serotonin in the brain.

Not having enough light during the 'natural' times of the day time, can reset your body clock into an unnatural pattern which can cause sleep disorders of different kinds.
